Dear Rabbis, Dignitaries, Members of the Lyon Community, Friends, Ladies and Gentlemen and, in particular, Rabbi Daniela Touati.

Both Miriam Kramer, the immediate past chairman of the European Union for Progressive Judaism and a current Vice President, and I, are past chairmen of the Leo Baeck College and we are therefore fully aware of the amount of effort, work, dedication and sheer hard study required over its five year course for any student to complete the programme and be ordained by receiving Semicha from the college.

We know that Rabbi Touati has been an exemplary student of the Leo Baeck College and the Lyon community should be both very proud and grateful that it will now be led by such a capable person. I am also delighted that Rabbi Touati can now proudly take her place as an active member of the European Rabbinic Assembly currently chaired by Rabbi Rene Pfertzel.

As the current President of the European Union for Progressive Judaism it gives me great pleasure to bring you greetings from our chairman, Sonja Guentner, our Life President, Leslie Bergman and the Management Board of the EUPJ on this auspicious occasion.

I had the pleasure of spending a weekend with you not that long ago when the EUPJ held an Executive Board Shabbaton hosted by the Lyon Community. I still remember the warmth and friendship extended by your members ………..as well as the wonderful food. The EUPJ is delighted and proud that the Lyon community is such an active member of the EUPJ.

As this is truly a milestone in the life of the Lyon Community in the closing of one chapter and embarking on a new chapter in its life, may I extend the age old blessing on the completion of one of the five books of the Torah and the commencement of the next. Let us be strong, let us be strong and let us strengthen one another. Chazak, Chazak V’nitchazek.

Miriam Kramer will now say a few words in a language far more familiar to most of you. Thank you.

Discours de Miriam Kramer

Rabbins, Mesdames, Messieurs, Chers Amis,
